I live in the ‘burbs and love a sneaky Sunday lunch close to home with plenty of wine and indulgent food. To be honest… I like this kinda lunch on Saturday too and wine filled dinners wherever possible. But our visit to Botanicum Cafe & Grill was a Sunday lunch and it just ticked all the boxes! The food was fantastic with crispy calamari and bubbles to start, big bowls of pasta and gorgeous pizza paired with lovely wine and the most perfect chocolate fondant to end.
We had such a gorgeous lazy lunch at Botanicum Cafe & Grill that I have actually been back again. And two visits at the same restaurant in one month is really uncommon for me. I think I might be making Botanicum Cafe & Grill a regular Sunday spot!
Getting settled in at Botanicum
They have a pretty big menu with lots of pizzas, grill and burger options, salads, fish and some gorgeous pasta dishes. And to be honest – such a large menu is a little intimidating because there are just SO many choices. To help with the order anxiety we decided to pick a couple of snacks and share a pizza with a glass of bubbles.
We had the mushroom arancini and the salt and pepper squid. These are perfect to pair with bubbles and I particularly liked the crispy squid. The aioli paired with the squid is super delicious and the preferred dip for the arancini too!
The Botanicum pizzas are delicious! We started with the traditional margherita and I loved how simple and authentic it was. The chewy dough, slightly sweet tomato passata, suuuuper stringy mozzarella and fresh basil was just divine! I love Neapolitan style pizzas. If you’re looking for another great authentic pizza spot I would recommend Bocca on Bree!
On my second visit I went for a pizza and wine date with a girlfriend. We ordered the bacon, feta and avo pizza and the Bocconcino on a blanco base with parma ham, rocket and cherry tomatoes. Both were good but I think the bacon one was a little bit more delicious!
On both my visits we enjoyed The Search which is a white blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. This wine is absolutely delicious and a great food pairing white wine. And at about R220 a bottle it is punching well above its price point. One of the co-owners, Marc, is super passionate about wine and I would highly recommend chatting through the wine list with him if you’re interested in finding a new wine gem.
We decided after smashing through the pizza and snacks that weren’t up for full main courses but couldn’t resist the homemade pappardelle pasta with lamb ragout! We ordered one to share and they were kind enough to divide our dish between two bowls. The half portions were great and the full main course must be super generous! I loved the pulled lamb and the perfect al dente pappardelle for scooping everything up.
We paired our pasta with the beetroot and walnut salad. I loved the multi-colour baby beets served with toasted walnuts, bocconcini and citrus dressing.
Don’t miss dessert at Botanicum Cafe & Grill
Look, our lunch at Botanicum was delicious. BUT if this whole blog post was just an ode to the magic that was their chocolate fondant – I would also be okay with that. The Botanicum dark chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon crumble is without a doubt the best chocolate fondant I have ever tried. My boyfriend’s brother is a connoisseur of chocolate dessert so I will be inviting them for a double date ASAP!
We also tried the custard filled doughnuts with cinnamon sugar. These were delicious and a brilliant pairing with a very sneaky glass of dessert wine.
