We recently visited Restaurant Seven in Somerset West to try out their winter special menu. They are offering a set dinner menu of three courses for R295 per person. It was my first visit and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m excited to report we were wow’ed by the subtle blend of a casual bistro eatery with fine dining touches. Seven is George Jardine’s 7th restaurant and you can really see the experience paying off at Restaurant Seven.
And I know you read Somerset West and are thinking – sorry where? But it took us 45 minutes from the Southern Suburbs in peak traffic so really it’s no biggie. It’s even more convenient if you’re based in Somerset West or looking for a convenience date night from Stellenbosch. I think they’re worth the extra mile especially paired with this super winter special. Friday date night sorted!

We opted for the additional snack of crispy Saldanha Bay oysters with aioli. They’re insanely delicious and I am now doubting why we eat oysters any other way. Two pretty little oysters arrived wrapped in crispy tempura batter and balanced in their shells with a generous dollop of decadent aioli for scooping. I am a so-so oyster fan. I’ll have one if it is accompanied with exciting toppings but that’s really about it. But these tempura babies are seriously delicious and a new favourite of mine. In fact, I think I would re-visit Restaurant Seven just for a pile of tempura oysters, decadent aioli and a plate of skinny fries. Maybe they could add this to their summer menu please ;)!
We then had lightly salted East Coast hake with cauliflower, risotto and pickled calamari. This portion is super generous and could pass as a main course in many restaurants. I loved the beautiful cooked piece of hake served with slightly crunchy cauliflower and the sweet tangy touches of pickled calamari through the dish to help cut the richness of the risotto. It truly was a 5/5 starter option.
The main event
For mains I had the aged Chalmar sirloin with a soft herb crust, charred onions and Bearnaise sauce. This is a signature Seven dish and has received plenty of praise. It’s great to see Seven sharing their top dishes on their winter special menu. My sirloin arrived a perfect medium rare and was seriously a top notch steak. Be warned though – this is a giant steak and you will definitely get your monies worth here!
My friend tried the butter roasted line caught yellowtail, fricassee of pancetta, tomato and baby spinach. This was another perfect piece of fish! I loved the little gnocchi for scooping up the umami sauce and the packed with flavour baby tomatoes.
We opted for a side order of triple cooked hand cup crispy chips. These chips seriously packed the crunch and were great for scooping any extra Bearnaise. But were truly an overindulgence because we had so much food even without them!
The Souffle Magic at Restaurant Seven
I was so excited to see the mandarin and grand marnier souffle flambe! George Jardine is famous for his souffles which I first tried at Jordan a very long time ago. I was so delighted to find a perfect souffle in the middle of Somerset West! Guys! Us in the big city have got something to learn from Somerset West! The souffle stood incredibly tall and I loved the extra drama of the flambe. Maybe I am super corny but goodness I just loved it!
The souffle was a perfect little orange cloud with that perfectly slightly crisp souffle top. And that vanilla ice cream dropped into the heart of the souffle was just heavenly. All in all a fantastic dessert and not one you would expect to find on an affordable winter special menu!
