A few weekends ago we were out in Stellenbosch. We were um’ing and ah’ing between wine tasting, grabbing lunch or heading to Majeka House for an afternoon nap. I was voting for nap – but we were hungry! Luckily Jono remembered we hadn’t yet visited De Vrije, Bertus Basson’s new burger spot in the heart of Stellies. Overture and Spek en Bone are both Bertus Basson restaurants which we have loved in the past so we were going in with high hopes!
De Vrije serves 200g free range beef burgers with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, pickles and double cheese. That’s it. You get a bad ass beef burger. You can be fancy by adding smoked chili sauce, melrose and biltong or bacon. But that is it – there is no chicken or veggie or anything else burger. And I LOVE that. Bertus Basson wants to sell a kick ass beef burger and that is what you’re getting.
The De Vrije Burger!
De Vrije is not really a long lazy lunch kind of place. They’re a take away spot with a bar counter and a few stools for those wanting to eat there. Our burgers arrived wrapped up and in a giant paper bag. We helped ourselves to a bar stool and promptly got stuck in.
Hot tip – you definitely need your hair tied back and your sleeves rolled up for this burger.
The burgers and chips are all freshly made so be prepared for about a ten minute wait. It’s fast food that needs just a little longer. The rolls are topped with sesames and toasted, the burger patties were a perfect medium rare (our preference when asked), the cheese is melted and the pickles are incredible! This truly was a brilliant burger.
We also ordered hand cut potato “tjips” in a cheesy sauce. You can also choose between BBQ spice dusted and peri peri. I would definitely suggest sharing the chips as it is a huge box and the cheese sauce was super decadent!
In conclusion – I think I have found my new favourite burger! Other burger highlights can be found over here with gems such as Jack Black Brewery, Devil’s Peak Taproom and Spice Route’s Barley and Biltong. I’m all about the classic cheese burger with good pickles and a toasted bun and caramelised onions if I am feeling fancy.

The De Vrije Soft Serve
Every burger comes with a coupon for a soft serve ice cream. What’s great is that you don’t have to use the coupon there and then but can visit again at a later stage. We were pretty full so opted to share one ice cream and keep the other coupon as the perfect excuse for a re-visit!
