A little while ago I spent the day exploring Constantia with The Entertainer. I have been using The Entertainer for a good five years now and love the app. Favourites on this year’s app include burgers at Hudsons, Sushi at Manga and a shellac pedi from Hey Gorgeous. For our Constantia day I tick off two new spots that I now love – Buitenverwachting and Jonkershuise at Groot Constantia! We joined Buitenverwachting to try out their brand new AVP Pairing! This is their Amuse Vintage Pairing which pairs three delicious little amuse-bouche with the current and older vintage wines. The amuse-bouche are really more like little starters than one bite wonders but this is better because you definitely want more than one bite!!
The restaurant at Buitenverwachting is newly renovated and absolutely beautiful! The chic interiors open out onto the vineyards and mountains. The restaurant serves a normal a la carte menu and based on our experience I am definitely keen to visit soon!
The restaurant is a perfect place for a summer’s lunch with these great views! Make sure to book during summer season or you’ll lose your spot to the ever efficient foreigners (Germans…. I am looking at you 😉 )
First course at Buitenverwachting:
Risotto with mushroom, sweetcorn, parsley and chorizo.
This dish was absolutely incredible and probably the best risotto I have had this year. I loved the creamy risotto with the sweetcorn and the spicy chorizo really pulled it all together. This was served with the Husseys Vlein 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and a recent vintage Sauvignon Blanc. The newer vintage did not work for me – too young and too much acid. But I loved the aged Sauvignon Blanc and felt the freshness helped cut the creaminess of the risotto and the fatty chorizo.
Grilled angelfish and seafood on linguine in Caldeirada sauce and chermoula.
I’m pretty picky with seafood but this was perfect! Each little seafood element on the plate was wonderful from the calamari with crispy tentacles, the juicey muscle, the firm prawn and the perfect fillet of grilled angelfish. The linguine was delicious and I could have just had a giant bowl of this drenched in the Caldeirada sauce.
This was served with the 2014 and current vintage Chardonnay. I liked both the current and aged chardonnay on their own and enjoyed both as a pairing.
Cafe de Paris butter pan fried beef fillet with bone marrow crust and RWS sauce.
I don’t want to pick a favourite… but if I had to it would probabl be this gorgeous medium rare beef fillet served with the crunchy, salty, fatty and slight sweet bone marrow crust. This was super more-ish and would make an incredible main course dish. Alternatively send out a few of these and I’ll pop them in a french loaf with a slather of aioli!
This was paired with the 2007 Christine which is a serious Bordeaux red blend with plenty of time in oak. From the looks of it you actually can’t buy this wine anymore! It was such a privilege to drink such a lovely old wine and of course the pairing was perfect!
And a veggie option!
Vegetarian’s don’t you worry! They are more than happy to make a vegetarian pairing just make sure to let them know when booking the AVP experience. The gorgeous sweetcorn risotto dish is the same as the standard pairing (just minus the chorizo). And then things get exciting with beautiful veggies! Our veggies friends were very happy with their dishes and pairings!
The AVP experience is R245 per person which is definitely a pricier wine tasting experience! I would recommend this for a fancy day out this summer. However… if you have The Entertainer the AVP experience is R245 for two people! This means, more wine, more food and no need for a special occasion!
