I have been a long time fan of Idiom Wine Farm from their lovely Italian wines to their fantastic fine dining menu served in the most beautiful setting. We joined them for lunch when they opened two years ago and had a brilliant experience. Since then they have a new chef and a brilliant new Spring menu we were excited to try.
The restaurant at Idiom Wine Farm offers a two course and three course menu for R315 and R390 respectively. I would highly recommend the three course menu which also includes an amuse bouche, intermezzo and friandise (post dessert). It is a pricier menu but with all the extra dishes, the gorgeous views and the suggested wine pairings it feels like a special occasion. And on special occasions a little splurging goes a long way!
Our lunch started with me walking around open jawed at the stunning views. Even though we had visited before I was completely blown away by the view all over again. This is a very big statement but I think this might be the wine farm with the best view in the Western Cape. I do stand to be corrected, and would love to hear your “best view” recommendations.
Because deciding what to order is difficult we started with a glass of prosecco and Idiom’s lovely breads. I love a good bread course with freshly baked breads and fancy butters. And despite knowing we were about to order three gourmet courses we couldn’t resist eating all the bread!
First Course with Idiom Wine Farm
I ordered the poached stone fruit salad with burnt cashew, coconut yoghurt and shaved beetroot. This was such a lovely fresh dish and was perfect for the hot weather. I loved the juicy stone fruit served with the crunchy roasted cashews. This dish has definitely inspired me to up my salad game this year!
Jono went with the cured trout tartare with dolce verde, creme fraiche and dried olives. This dish was incredible and possibly my favourite dish of the whole lunch. If you’re visiting Idiom any time soon you definitely need to order this! The cured trout tartare was absolute perfection and the flavours balanced beautiful.
Each dish has a suggested Idiom Wine pairing and it is such fun leaving the tough wine choices to the experts. Both of our dishes were served with Idiom Viognier 2015 as the recommended pairing. I loved the fresh fruity viognier with both these dishes.
The Main Event
I had the beef fillet served medium rare with fried chickpeas, glazed carrots, tomato preserve and smoked olive jus. I often order fillet steak and have to work my way through many pretty average steaks. This was not the case – with the fillet being a perfect medium rare, served with the crispiest chickpeas I have ever eaten and pulled together by the decadent smoked olive jus. I especially loved the tomato preserved included in the dish which lifted what could have been quite a heavy dish.
Jono went with the pork duo of pork belly and pork fillet served with broccoli puree, sunflower seeds, kale gnudi and tenderstem broccoli. This was another winning dish and great to see pork fillet on the menu.
Dessert was a dark chocolate dome with hazelnut anglaise, rose ice cream and raspberry sauce. I loved this dessert! It was such fun with the bright colours, chocolate shards that open to reveal the chocolate dome inside and lots of rose flavoured candy! This dessert was delicious with a good balance between rich dark chocolate and rose and raspberry flavoured extras.
Jono had the tiramisu with a gorgeous citrus ice cream. He absolutely loved the tiramisu but because I am not a coffee drinker it is never going to be my favourite dessert. I did love the delicate citrus ice cream served with the tiramisu and felt it balanced the rich decadent dessert.
We had such a wonderful lunch at Idiom Wine Farm. The menu is going to be seasonal with changes coming through as Spring moves into Summer. I am looking forward to trying the new dishes- or maybe just going back to eat more trout tartare!
Idiom will also be hosting a prosecco festival in November – so definitely look out for that!!
