On our recent weekend away to Stellenbosch we headed home via our final lunch at Swirl at Stellenbosch Vineyards. Swirl is is their revamped and re-imagined restaurant. Swirl at Stellenbosch Vineyards has created some incredible pairing menus to showcase their wine range and brilliant food. The restaurant was created as a wine and food pairing hot spot in Stellenbosch as the perfect partner to their busy tasting room next door. We joined them for their Wine Makers pairing of five courses paired with their premium range of wines.

Wine Makers Pairing with Swirl at Stellenbosch Vineyards

We started with a fabulous glass of Infiniti MCC and soaked in the view. Stellenbosch Vineyards is a beautiful wine farm and was children friendly with a full play area and lawns for running around.

We had the Wine Makers Pairing but asked to have the portions halved as we had eaten such a big breakfast at Majeka House!

We started with grilled ginger and lime prawn tails with lemon aioli, paired with the Credo Chardonnay. Their Chardonnay is fantastic and paired well with the slightly sweet and zesty prawns.

Next we had the chicken tikka masala with basmati rice and the Credo Chenin Blanc. This was probably my favourite dish and pairing. The chicken thigh was tender and succulent and was great with the creamy warm spice tikka masala. This is perfect comfort food and could easily hit the spot in a big bowl in winter! I was surprised by the pairing of Chenin Blanc with a curry but the wine had enough structure to carry the pairing.

The Main Act

The parmesan herb and pepper crusted lamb rack with sweet potato puree was paired with both the Credo Shiraz and SMV. It was lovely to try two of their top flagship wines and compare and contrast the wine pairing for ourselves. The Credo Shiraz was spicy and delicious but my favourite was the SMV which was smoother and paired well with the juicey lamb.

Our main course in the pairing was the ostrich steak with berry jus and braised cabbage paired with the Credo Pinotage Reserve. The steak was cooked to perfect and worked well with the Pinotage.

We finished off with the lemon infused creme brulee paired with the lovely Infiniti Noble Late Harvest.  The creme brulee was fantastic and the tartness of the lemon carried the sweet Noble Late Harvest pairing.

Pairing Options with Swirl at Stellenbosch Vineyards

Our pairing was R395 for five courses and seven glasses of wine. This is a fantastic price especially considering we were enjoying the premium wines of Stellenbosch Vineyards. There are three pairing experiences on offer with the Wine Makers pairing being the premium pairing. They also offer the Signature pairing of five courses and six glasses of wine for R225 per person. And the Heyden’s pairing of four courses with five glasses of wine for R155 per person. They’re incredible value for money tastings and they would be a treat to indulge in over the festive season!

If you’re not looking for a full pairing experience they also offer lovely cheese and charcuterie platters. There is also a full a la carte menu of dishes to share at the table. I am greatly looking forward to heading back soon to try the sirloin bruschetta, fishcakes and pork belly!
