This winter season we spent a weekend away in both Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. I had such fun putting together a recommended weekend in Franschhoek that I wanted to try the same for Stellenbosch! Here are my highlights and recommendations for a fantastic weekend in Stellenbosch! We’re covering what to eat, where to stay and most importantly what to drink! We are beyond spoilt for choice in Stellenbosch with fantastic restaurants and wine farms around every corner!
What to Eat
Visit Spek and Bone for a local fix
I have been wanting to visit Spek and Bone for the longest time and this recent trip was the perfect excuse! We were joined by a friend and Stellenbosch local who helped us navigate through a really delicious menu! We actually had to really behave ourselves and not order everything! Near the end our restraint did waiver when we ordered all the pasta small plates in one go with our second bottle of wine! Spek and Bone will be heading your way in a full blog post pretty soon! For now- grab a table and eat the mac and cheese- you can thank me later!
Keep it casual with a delicious charcuterie board from Lanzerac Deli
We joined Lanzerac for a quick wine pairing and ordered a Ploughman’s board of cheese and charcuterie from the deli! We really loved this generous board with fresh bread, cured meats, caramelised onion and different cheeses! The tomato jam was another highlight with mature cheddar. I enjoyed snacking on the Ploughman’s Board whilst trying a few of Lanzerac’s top estate wines.
Indulge in some fine dining with Makaron
We had an incredible dinner with Makaron! I have a lot more to say on the matter- especially as we had five courses! I will be writing a full blog post on our dinner. However, the basic run through is that they have created an incredible small plate menu with exciting flavours, great ingredients and unusual combinations. All this is brilliant on their own- but they kick it up a notch with one of the best wine pairings I have ever had. Its a serious must do if you’re looking to treat yourselves on your weekend in Stellenbosch.
Enjoy great value food and wine pairing at Swirl
Stellenbosch Vineyards has a fantastic new restaurant called Swirl. Swirl offers a brilliant a la carte menu but we joined them for the five course food and wine pairing! More food and wine? YES! I was also really impressed with the knock out great value at Swirl with top wines from the Credo range paired with really brilliant food. There will definitely be a pull blog post coming – so watch out for it! This is going to be a hot spot this summer!
What to drink
L’Avenir for a wine pairing with a twist
L’Avenir is a perfect wine farm to spend the day. Join them for a tasting, stay for the cheese board and end with game of giant Jenga. The farm and the staff are so welcoming that you could easily stay longer than you intended! We know their wine range very well and enjoy their bubbles, chenin blanc, premium rosé and their top notch pinotage. I was excited to see the farm has a few new varietals and blends up their sleeve but we’ll leave that for you to explore!
Our most recent visit was to try their wine and carpaccio pairing. This is a fantastic pairing for the locals but also an amazing opportunity for our tourists! The first pairing is a chenin blanc and crocodile carpaccio! Oh yes, wine pairing safari style!
Fantastic value wines with Longridge
Longridge makes some of my favourite easy drinking wines. If you’re looking for a beautiful wine farm with a large range, great wines and fantastic value then Longridge will hit all the spots. Don’t miss The Emily which is lovely pinot noir and chardonnay rosé.
Wine from the estate with the best view
I love the Delaire Graff estate for their beautiful views and incredible art. I would highly recommend joining them for a wine tasting this summer. We grabbed a sunny spot outside and enjoyed their Chardonnays. Don’t leave without wondering around the estate to spot the many many Dylan Lewis sculptures! (He’s a personal favourite of mine and another gem of Stellenbosch).
Don’t miss a spa day at the Lanzerac Spa
I have never had a Spa Day and now I fear Lanzerac has ruined me forever! We arrived to glasses of bubbles, gorgeous views and white fluffy robes! The Lanzerac Spa has recently been renovated and is such a beautiful space. We enjoyed a couples massage upstairs which was an hour of utter bliss and quiet.
Unfortunately, I really struggle to relax. I run on a permanent buzz and as such was anxious I would wiggle around for the whole hour. But I was delighted to find that with the combination of soft lighting, a warm massage chair and competent professional I was transformed into a relaxing pro for one hour!
After our massage we grabbed coffee and fresh fruit smoothies. I grabbed a few glossy magazines and tucked up outside with that view! Talk about indulgence! Next up was a splash in the hot tub and a few laps in the pool! We really loved our time with Lanzerac and I would highly recommend a massage treatment and a good three hours to fully enjoy the facilities afterwards!
