Franschhoek is a little cultural hot spot about an hour out of Cape Town. We recently visited for a weekend escape and ticked off a few of our Franschhoek bucket list items! If you’re looking for exciting ideas of what to do in Franschhoek I have you covered. We’re talking beer, fine wine, delicious food and a fancy pants boutique hotel! Here’s to your next weekend in Franschhoek!

What to Eat

Experience your own 100 foot journey with Marigold in Franschhoek

I have been dying to visit Marigold ever since I saw the first gorgeous photos on Instagram – bright colours, exciting flavours and the promise of something delicious. Marigold did a stupendous job on delivering on that promise of something delicious. We were absolutely blown away by the incredible flavours, the beautiful presentation and the charming service. I will be doing a full write up about this wonderful lunch with all our recommended must orders!

A little bit of Mexico on your way home

Another long time wish list item for me was to visit Cosecha. They are an authentic Mexican restaurant on the Noble Hill Wine estate. I have been dying to see a guacistadors in action. Don’t know what a guacistadors is? Don’t worry- I didn’t either! A guacistadors is an expert guacamole maker who makes your perfect guacamole table side per your preference!

We had a fantastic lunch of guacamole, duck carnitas and a lovely bottle of Viognier from the estate. I would highly recommend them for a lunch stop on your way home from Franschhoek as they are about fifteen minutes out of Franschhoek in the direction of Cape Town.

What to Drink

Book a tasting with Black Elephant

Black Elephant only does tastings by appointment. This means we have never joined them for a tasting because we are never organised enough. When visiting Franschhoek we are often popping up for a lunch or a dinner. But with the luxury of a weekend in Franschhoek we were able to get a little more organised!

I would highly recommend making the effort to arrange a tasting. Black Elephant produces some incredible and exciting wines. The farm owner takes you through the range with great stories that paint a picture of what the brand is about.

Try a beer tasting at Tuk Tuk Microbrewery

Franschhoek isn’t only for wine drinkers! If you’re excited about beer then make sure to visit the Tuk Tuk Microbrewery for a taste of their craft beer range. We popped into the buzzing Tuk Tuk Brewery for had the rugby on the big screen and beers on tap!

We really enjoyed the educational beer tasting. Our waiter introduced the beers with accompanying hops and barley which really brings the smells and flavours to life. My favourites were the ales which were light drinking and full of fruity flavour.

Try some of the best wine in our country with Mullineux and Leeu

Mullineux is actually a Swartland farm who has joined forces with a Franschhoek team to bring a little bit of their magic to the French Quarter. If you have always wanted to try these award winning wines but haven’t had a chance to get out to the Swartland then I would highly recommend this spot closer to home.

The tasting room is beautiful, the staff are incredibly knowledgable and the wine is unbelievably good. Just a fair warning, this is a pretty pricing tasting and you will need to book in advance. Find the details on their site over here.

Where to Stay:

We spend our weekend in Franschhoek at the flipping stunning Franschhoek Boutique Hotel! The Franschhoek Boutique hotel was perfect for our weekend away because it is so central. We easily walked to Tuk Tuk Brewery and Marigold. We also enjoyed a Saturday morning stroll from the hotel through the gorgeous art galleries on the main road.

The Franschhoek boutique hotel has six rooms each uniquely designed. We stayed in the Aztec room for the weekend. Particularly highlights include the stunning views of the Franschhoek mountains and the gorgeous fireplace in the room. After our big Saturday lunch at Marigold it was perfect to head “home”. We climbed into bed with the fire burning and a glass of wine in hand.
