We love heading out of Cape Town and exploring new towns. Despite Hermanus only being an hour and a half away from Cape Town it is a town I haven’t visited for years. One Marine Drive in Hermanus was the perfect excuse to head back and explore a little further. I am going to do a full post of what to get up to in Hermanus but for now I just want to talk all about our new favourite hotel in Hermanus!
One Marine Drive in Hermanus is a gorgeous boutique hotel and the baby sister of Blackheath Lodge in Sea Point. We had such an incredible night away with Blackheath that we knew we needed to head out to their Hermanus property!
The hotel is right across from the Hermanus cliff walk and promises amazing views. We spent the early evening on the balcony watching the sun set over the ocean. The front rooms are ocean facing and come with balconies to bring the coast to you.
Hermanus is famous for their Southern Right whales that visit every year. And I love how One Marine Drive brings the whales into their decor. My favourite has to be the gorgeous soft teddy-whale that is perched on your bed on arrival! The best part is – the talented designed behind the whales has a marine biologist for a husband who kept making her redo them until they were 100% accurate – right down to the positioning of the barnacles!!
The Beautiful One Marine Drive
Our room was beautiful with a giant king sized bed, crisp sheets and excessively large pillows. The room has two inside chairs which are large enough for the perfect “curl up with a book” spot. I know this for a fact – we tested it out! I love the clean and classic decor with the bright trendy touches such as the trendy gold wallpaper in our room. Another favourite decor highlight was the communal tea area with leafy wallpaper and bright pink cupboards!
If you’re looking for a more social spot you can head out to the long balcony at the back of the property or the swimming pool with their wonderful striped deck chairs! When we arrived there was a large group of happy faces parked off on the upstairs balcony with sundowners in hand.
There is a bar downstairs with a little bit of everything you need and they will happily help you out with a cocktail, glass of wine or cold beer. What I love about both One Marine Drive in Hermanus and Blackheath Lodge in Cape Town is that nothing is a problem! There is always someone happy to help with a drink, an extra blanket or snacks between meals. And you always leave with a “See you soon” because they know you’ll want to be back soon!
Breakfast at One Marine Drive in Hermanus
When away on holiday I think it is very important to start breakfast with bubbles. Luckily, One Marine Drive agrees with me! We arrived downstairs to a bottle of bubbles chilling in the ice bucket and a jug of fresh orange juice. Jono promptly poured big glasses and I went in search of breakfast!
They have a lovely continental spread to start. I enjoyed colourful fresh fruit with pancakes. And Jono had a fresh croissant with ham and Camembert – a personal favourite. They also have a hot breakfast menu – we went with the eggs Benedict and an omelette. At this point we were sufficiently pigged out for Sunday breakfast! Somehow I didn’t manage to find space for another mimosa – a dessert stomach for adults ;).
An Easy One Marine Drive Adventure
Right across the road from the hotel is the Hermanus Cliff Walk. This is about a 5km walk from start to finish – we joined somewhere in the middle so our walk was only about 2km to the end and 2km back. I obviously stand to be corrected on the technicalities but you’re catching my drift. You walk. It’s very nice. And not too far.
After all that breakfast we decided a walk was in order! Jono and I marched along the Cliff Walk and talked about the kinds of things you can only deal with when relaxed enough. We talked about work next year, and holidays we’d like to go on and saving money. And it was really nice. We also talked about buying houses in the area. We pretty much talk about buying property everywhere we visit. Unfortunately that isn’t in the budget right now but luckily I will always have One Marine Drive in Hermanus to #comehome to.
The whale season runs from about June to December which means we are heading into prime whale season time! Why not make like a tourist and head down to visit them? Best part about it adventures in winter? Winter rates!
Also pop onto the One Marine Drive website and check out their winter rates and specials.
Have you been to Hermanus lately? What’s your favourite thing to do there? We are hoping to head back soon and are in the process of compiling a “Must Do” List!
