I am a huge fan of The Hog House in Ndebeni and as such was delighted to find out about The Hoghouse at Spier. If you have been following my blog – you will know of my huge love of Stellenbosch. I was recently called the unofficial Miss Stellenbosch and to be honest, I’m thrilled! We headed out to a night of live music, dancing, giant glasses of wine and really delicious food!
The Hoghouse at Spier is in a beautiful old heritage building with little nooks and crannies around every corner. You could sneak in a quick lunch or a business meeting over coffee in one of their more private corners. We were seated outside to soak in the live music, warm spring evening and great festivities!
Snacks with Hoghouse at Spier
We started with a selection of their snacks to share and a few beer tasting boards. The Hoghouse brews their own beer so I always suggest trying their tasting of four and then deciding on your favourite beer for your second round. The beer tasting is a fun social way to get the whole table interacting.
My favourite of the snacks had to be the pig tails glazed in honey and mustard. I am obsessed with pig’s tails with their crispy crunchy sweetness. I know it sounds like an odd thing to order – but if you can wrap your head around it I would highly recommend giving it a try!
The wild mushroom arancinis are also delicious and vegetarian friendly. You can’t go wrong with the tortilla chips and guacamole as a pairing with their beer! And if you are feeling really brave give their chili poppers a go! These guys are fiery hot and wrapped in bacon! You are officially warned!!
Shared plates for dinner
And then dinner arrived! Goodness we worked our way through a lot of food! The best way to order at Hoghouse is to pick lots of dishes and sides across the menu and all tuck in and share. That way everyone gets to try all the dishes and not be faced with the woes of order envy. I greatly suffer from order envy and as such this style of eating suits me perfectly!
Veggie friendly choices at Hoghouse
With many friends and family moving towards the vegetarian way of life, I have become hyper sensitive with regards to what is on offer for our veggie friends. Whilst Hoghouse at Spier specialises in smoked and slow cooked meats they offer some fantastic veggie options!
Fantastic veggie options include:
- whole baked cauliflower with goats cheese, almonds, capers and shitake
- charred butternut with maple syrup and pecan nuts
- fire roasted corn on the cob with ash butter
- Mac ‘n Cheese with leeks and gruyere
- fire roasted beets with Baba Ganoush and pine oil
Sounds amazing right? Throw in some mushroom arancini balls and you have an amazing dinner ahead of you!
The mac ‘n cheese is so delicious and is definitely a must order whether as a main dish or a side to accompany their slow cooked meats or fried chicken!
Main course favourites
Believe it or not but Hoghouse also makes the most fantastic salad! I ate the majority of their house salad of fresh rocket, red onions, Parmesan and the most addictive hoisan-style dressing. I actually think I would visit again even if this salad was the only thing on the menu!
The buttermilk fried chicken is the star of the show and my must order recommendation! You also cannot go wrong with the pulled pork or their brisket burnt ends! The lightly battered fish was a surprising dish and was served with a decadent tartar sauce.
For dessert we enjoyed a beautiful platter of dainty little tartlets! I couldn’t resist the golden yellow, flaky pastry Pasteis de nata! These are Portuguese egg custard tarts and something Hoghouse at Spier is very famous for! They sell out before lunch at the Oranjezicht City Farm Saturday markets.
Other pastries included a zesty lemon meringue tart and delicious chocolate tarts topped with salted caramel or chocolate ganache. You really can’t go wrong! And after our giant dinner feast, we were grateful for just a little sweetness to finish off the meal!

- This coming Saturday is the Hogtober fest which promises great live music, beer and the most decadent hot dogs ever! Find tickets here!
