Idiom is perched atop Somerset West on Sir Lowry’s pass. They have officially been open about a month and they are seriously rocking it. They had a pre-launch event where a group of some of my favourite and most respected bloggers attended. I was in Jo’burg at the time and sadly had to give it a miss. I followed up afterwards with these bloggers and received mixed reviews. The sentiment was that the views and art was mind blowing but that the food wasn’t quite ready yet. I am bringing this up because I want you to know what has been said. This pre-launch event took place in the beginning of May, the Idiom team then spent two months before their opening in July perfecting their dishes and I would like to say they have now gotten it spot on!

I would also seriously encourage the bloggers who felt the food needed a little work to head back and give this amazing venue another chance! The food industry is tough – and reviews can really hurt. Especially reviews which may be based on an idea and not a final executed product.

Whatever kinks Idiom may have had two months ago have been completely ironed out. We absolutely loved our lunch at Idiom and I have been so looking forward to sharing this post and their amazing value for money menu with you!

We arrived a little early for our 12pm lunch with the intention of having an explore of the estate and tasting their wines before lunch. I had heard the estate was beautiful but Idiom surpassed my expectations. The view is incredible and probably makes my top five restaurant views in Cape Town. Paired with the views are some amazing sculptures which just seem to add to the magic that is Idiom. I would highly recommend a little walk around before lunch to work on your appetite.

Our wine tasting was fantastic – with their wines in the 900 series being a firm favourite! They offer four paired wines for R120. This may seem a little pricey for a pairing but we are talking about some pretty gourmet options such as rosemary roasted lamb, porcini mushroom arancini or seared kudu loin. We are very excited to head back soon and try some of these pairings!

Lunch started with this beautiful bread board and a little amuse bouche of beetroot, orange and goats cheese soup. The amuse bouche was so fantastic that I actually think they should include it on the menu as a starter option! I am completely obsessed with beetroot and the pairing with orange is new to me and one I am excited to replicate at home!

The breads were fresh and delicious – with the twisted pretzels being our favourite. The bread board had fresh butter, black pepper, salt and black lava salt. They also brought through lovely bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I really appreciate when restaurants take the bread course seriously!

The idiom menu has a fine dining option and a more casual lunch menu. You can enjoy fresh salads, antipasto and burgers if you’re looking for something easy. We opted for the fine dining menu but were seriously tempted by the amazing burgers walking by!

The fine dining menu has a variety of courses paired with complimentary wines at a set price. Idiom does not yet have a liquor license for the restaurant and as such all the wines are included for free with the pairing! This is a seriously great deal and I would recommend heading through before they start charging for wines!

We enjoyed a three course menu and four course menu for R390 and R490 respectively with wine. Three course menus are normally that price before wine – so having the wine included makes this a huge winner! Four course means you can pick an extra dish from either the starters, mains or desserts. We opted for an extra starter because choosing was really difficult!IdiomOf the starters we had the Asparagus risotto with pea, mint and asparagus spears, drizzled with lemon infused olive oil and topped with Parmesan crisps. This was creamy and delicious and I loved the fresh asparagus and peas to keep the dish light.

We also had the panko crusted Mozambican prawns served with crushed wasabi avo, aioli and pesto. These prawns were fat and juicey with a delicious light panko crust. While I loved the pairing with the avo, I found we only needed a little pesto and not as much as it is served with. This dish was served with the Viognier which was one of my favourite wines and my favourite pairing.

Our last starter was my favourite! The ravioli Foresta which is porcini mushrooms and goat’s cheese ravioli tossed in a beurre Noisette on Hazelnut soil with crispy sage and shaved black truffles. This dish was seriously wonderful and packed with flavour! The light raviolis were stuffed with juicy porcini mushrooms and creamy goats cheese. I also loved the addition of the buttery, crispy sage.

For main course we tried both the seared salmon and flamed beef fillet. I love the presentation of all the dishes and it was exciting to see the plated art with every dish.

The flamed beef fillet is served with exotic mushrooms, potato fondants, steamed seasonal greens and a Cabernet Sauvignon reduction. Whilst this dish was delicious and I loved the exotic mushrooms, I ordered the fillet medium rare and it was very much well done. I always think well done is a sad thing to do to a brilliant piece of meat. They followed up, and happily offered to bring me another fillet. But I didn’t really want to delay our lunch and have to wait.

The seared salmon was served on a fennel bulb and orange salad with a cucumber butter. The seared salmon was so tender and soft with a crispy outside. I loved the fresh crisp fennel and orange with the rich salmon. This was a fantastic dish!

And then it was time for beautiful dessert! All three dessert options actually sounded amazing and we struggled to narrow it down to only two! We however, persevered and were very happy with our choices. The desserts are paired with the Idiom Imperium White Gold and makes a perfect finish to a decadent lunch!

I had the chocolate millefiori which was a frozen rose geranium and dark chocolate mousse rolled in hazelnut soil served with edible fynbos petals and rose Turkish delight. I love Turkish delight and pomegranates and I absolutely loved all the delicate flavours of this dish.

The other dessert we tried was the tiramisu with amaretto coffee flavours. I am not a fan of coffee- but the coffee was subtle and I seriously loved this boozy dessert! We finished our lunch with one final ‘mmmm’ and headed home with very full stomachs!
